brian lange.

[ curriculum vitae ]

spanning a variety of disciplines, including film and video, photography, installation art, and multimedia pieces, brian lange's work seeks to capture a modern world in which the more sinister aspects of life are not so easily disguised.  using his camera to distill the darker side of human psyche and human relationships, lange evokes uncanny atmospheres and images that penetrate with visceral force.  his fiercely idiosyncratic style combines elements of fashion photography and classic art with the distorted layers and manipulations of the photographic process to produce visually exuberant portraits.  unafraid to indulge in radical experimentation, he opts for direct manipulation of the celluloid, using optical printing, animation, and different hand-processes to create striking effects —a refreshing alternative to the mediascape of computer generated images. his films tread across a number of genres, including short films, music videos, documentaries, and features, and have screened in festivals across the nation.

lange holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography from tyler school of art, and yet another bachelor of fine arts degree in film and video from the school of the art institute in chicago.  he was recently awarded the follet fellowship from columbia college, where he will be pursuing a master of fine arts degree in film. lange spent most of his early years overseas, which he says has contributed to his unique work and sense of storytelling. since he began to study art, lange has lived in the dc area, philadelphia, new york city, and chicago, where he currently lives and works.
